Young professionals need a new strategy...

Gin and I had the privilege of being with many young professionals at a fundraiser last night for their mission here in our community. Several women and men were introduced to us by a great, mutual friend and the conversations just took off from there. Each were seeking a little advice about just how to connect with greater career possibilities in these challenging times. One was a seasoned writer and broadcasting professional, another was in banking, another two were in grad school. All were and are very professional, educated, well-spoken, and just trying to figure out their respective paths.

My advise was limited, due to the late hour and setting of this event. However, one common theme for each was obvious. Your resume', history, experience, and any of those "facts" on paper should be the last items of concern. Your succinct "story" about yourself and specific areas of interest and expertise should be first...then, it is all a matter of going through a relentless mental exercise to detail those you know and admire in your circles of influence. The Big Ask here is not to ask that uncle or old family friend to bankroll your new business idea. It's simply the request for a conversation, preferably in-person. But, you need that list of persons and professionals first. That's one great, mental maze I love to take on with those searching their way. It is not easy, at first, but the intelligent and inspired have no trouble getting it and running with it....you just have to get started, work with capable and caring mentors, and grow your network of conversations and souls. That's an undeniable route to even greater success.
